Meet John Farrington
John Farrington, dean emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, found his passion for science early: During his childhood in The Whaling City, New Bedford, Massachusetts, he developed a fascination with the work of Marie Curie, which intersected with a reverence for the fishing legacy of his hometown. Ultimately, Dr. Farrington earned his doctorate in oceanography at the University of Rhode Island and has spent his career researching organic chemicals in marine environments.

Marine snow is made up of particles of tiny algae, plants, feces, and pieces of dead animals. These particles get colonized by organisms and become the food web that is transported to the deep ocean. Biological oceanographer Uta Passow’s research focuses on how oil affects marine snow and how marine snow affects oil.

The Story of GoMRI
Not long after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) was created. Designed to fund an investigation of the largest offshore oil spill in history, GoMRI quickly became one of the most successful research collaborations in marine science history. Today, as the initiative’s efforts draw to a close, the breadth of research is unprecedented. It’s an amazing story—one that started with a single phone call.
