Meet Chuck Wilson
Chuck Wilson grew up fishing and crabbing in the Chesapeake Bay and at Maryland beaches. Those experiences sparked an early fascination with the aquatic world, which, eventually, led him to pursue a PhD in Fisheries Science. Armed with that degree, he forged what became a prestigious academic career at Louisiana State University as a professor of oceanography, provost, director of the Sea Grant program, and author of more than 100 scholarly articles and papers.
After the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Dr. Wilson was a natural choice for chief scientific officer of the newly formed Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI). In this role, he assumed the massive responsibility of coordinating of the collective of research grant recipients, academic institutions, and outreach specialists, who ensure that the resulting science is seen and understood by the general public.

Scott Rikard manages the hatchery at Auburn’s Shellfish Laboratory, which produces millions of oysters every year. He and his team cultivate oysters for research that examines the effects of freshwater releases. Their goal is to help the ecosystem recover.
